The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Friday that it had launched an investigation into Tesla to determine whether the recall of more than 2 million vehicles announced by the company in December was sufficient.

Tesla's recall is aimed at installing new autopilot assistance system protection measures. However, NHTSA said that some vehicles still had accidents after installing the recall update software, and NHSTA conducted preliminary tests on the repaired vehicles, and the test results also supported the opening of the investigation.

NHTSA said it found that "Tesla's driver intervention system is weak and does not apply to too loose autopilot capabilities", resulting in a "critical safety gap". NHTSA also quoted Tesla as saying, "some of the repair measures require the car owner to choose to join, and the driver can easily withdraw it."

The agency noted that although Tesla had released software updates to address the issues, they had not been "included in the recall or otherwise identified as addressing defects with unreasonable security risks."

The new recall investigation covers Model Y, X, S, 3 and Cybertruck models equipped with autopilot systems in the US market, covering models produced between 2012 and 2024, NHTSA said.

In addition, NHTSA also raised concerns on Friday about the name "Autopilot" of Tesla's autopilot system, which "may make drivers think that the automation capability is greater than it actually is, thus putting too much trust in the automation system." In fact, Tesla's autopilot is designed to enable cars to automatically turn, accelerate and brake in the lane, while enhanced autopilot can help change lanes on highways, but will not fully automate the vehicles.
